Owen is also playing basketball twice a week. Our school offers a sort of little league season for three sports a year. In the fall, its basketball. Owen didn't play last year since we were new to the school and he was just getting settled, but he was ready to try this year. They couldn't find enough parents to "coach" the kids, so I volunteered and thus found my true calling as a basketball coach (for 1st and 2nd graders only). This was a crazy idea for lots of reasons. I am already extremely busy, and, more importantly, I know nothing about basketball. Literally, nothing. I know less than Jon Snow.
But my team of 6 squirrelly boys is learning a ton, and having fun too. Owen is incredible to watch play. He has a definite height advantage, and it is really fun to watch him leap up to grab the ball out of the air. And "coaching" has been a great experience. I adore having that special time with Owen, and I have had the opportunity to get to know a few high school students well since they help coach too and ref all the games. Owen and I both leave the games exhausted but happy.
Oliver is working on his swimming with swim lessons after school twice a week. He loves that water and continues to show no fear. It won't be long now before he can be floater free in the ocean!
Ollie is getting excited for his upcoming birthday. We have already booked a party for him, and he is counting down the days!
One of my home room students actually commented today that if we ever leave Abu Dhabi, they'll have to hire three people just to replace Derek. Too true! And with all that, he still makes sure I have time to get my grad school assignments done on the weekends!
Halloween does not go unnoticed here in Abu Dhabi. Our school puts on an incredible Fall Festival for the kids to dress up and trick-or-treat to all the different class booths. They had a blast this year, and were quite the hit as Flash and Owen Skywalker. The boys also got to go trick-or-treating around our apartment complex on Halloween night getting more candy than I would ever let them eat.
Otherwise, things are good here. The weather has finally reached a comfortable level, so we've been able to enjoy more time outdoors. We even had our first patio dinner the other night! And to top it all off, the countdown to my parents' visit has begun!
