Our sweet boy Owen turned five and a half while we were in Syracuse, New York. We have always done a little celebration for half birthdays because both boys have winter birthdays during busy times in the school year. We usually just go out for dinner and ice cream. Since we were away, that treat fell to Oma and Opa this year. They were joined by Grandma and Uncle Steve as well for pizza and ice cream.
Owen continues to amaze us every single day. He is growing up far too quickly for my liking. He's wearing a Size 7 clothing now and already fits into a Size 1 shoe. I can no longer shop for him in the baby section at stores which makes me a little sad. It feel like it happened fast because I haven't been able to really shop for him in about a year. No wonder his shorts were looking a little too short. Owen was the tallest kid in his class last year, and he is excited to see if anyone is taller than him in Kindergarten.
Since his birthday, Owen has learned to ride a two wheel bike and read a few simple books like "Go Dog Go" and "Hop on Pop." He has become a proficient swimmer and is able to do freestyle, backstroke, and breaststoke. He knows how to dolphin kick, but hasn't figured out the arms yet for butterfly. The kid even knows how many strokes it takes him to get from the flags to the wall when doing backstroke. I love that he loves swimming so much. He also loves to run and is very athletic--far more coordinated than I have ever been.
His sense of humor continues to develop. I love hearing his deep belly laugh when he watches a silly cartoon or movie. As we were flying from Tokyo to Denver, we all watched "Rio" on the plane. Owen was laughing so hard during one scene that people were unbuckling their seat belts so they could turn around and see what was so funny.
Owen has recently changed his favorite color from blue to red. He has loved blue since he was about two, so the sudden switch was a little shocking. Just today he informed me that the reason he changed his favorite color to red was because it is the fastest color. He also told me not to worry because he still likes blue too.
His favorite food is still blueberries, but he is a very good eater and loves helping in the kitchen. His favorite dessert is ice cream (any flavor). He does not like olives with pimentos, but will eat nearly everything else we put in front of him.
He likes the show "Jake and the Neverland Pirates" and loves playing pirates with his friends. He still likes playing with Legos and is thrilled that he is now old enough for the "really cool big kid" ones. His favorite place to go on vacation is Hong Kong. He loves swimming, playing soccer, and racing. He rarely sits still for more than a few seconds. He is very excited to start Kindergarten this year.
When he grows up, Owen says he wants to be "a teacher, a hockey guy, and a daddy."
